Membership and Fellowship Criteria
LAS uses different admission routes for its membership categories. Member and Associate Member categories may accept applications, while Fellowship and Honorary Membership normally proceed through nomination and review.
How Admission Works
LAS membership decisions are based on eligibility, merit, integrity and the needs of the Academy’s scientific mission. Applications and nominations are reviewed under the relevant category procedures. Submission of a form does not guarantee admission, election or honorary recognition.
Financial contribution, donation, sponsorship or personal relationship does not guarantee membership or Fellowship.
Membership Categories
Fellow
- Hold a doctoral degree or equivalent terminal qualification in a relevant field.
- Demonstrate a sustained record of significant scientific, scholarly or professional achievement.
- Show evidence of leadership, integrity and contribution to science, education, innovation or evidence-informed development.
- Demonstrate relevance to Liberia, Africa or the advancement of the Academy’s mission.
- Be nominated in accordance with the Academy’s Fellowship procedures.
Fellowship is an elected distinction and is not granted automatically through direct application.
Member
- Hold a relevant postgraduate qualification or demonstrate equivalent professional standing.
- Have an active record in research, teaching, innovation, professional practice, science communication or public service.
- Demonstrate academic and professional integrity.
- Be willing to contribute to the Academy’s activities and national scientific mission.
- Submit verifiable qualifications and professional information for review.
Associate Member
- Be a graduate student, early-career researcher, educator or professional with relevant academic or professional preparation.
- Demonstrate active interest or participation in research, teaching, innovation, science communication or community-based scientific work.
- Commit to integrity, collaboration and constructive participation in LAS activities.
- Provide verifiable academic or professional information for review.
Honorary Member
Honorary Membership may be conferred on individuals whose public, professional, institutional or philanthropic contributions have significantly supported science, education, innovation or evidence-informed development.
Honorary Membership is granted through nomination and approval. It is not open to direct self-application and does not carry the same academic status as elected Fellowship.
