Biography
Professor Delenasaw Yewhalaw is Professor of Medical Entomology at Jimma University, Ethiopia, and the Founding Director of the Tropical and Infectious Diseases Research Center (TIDRC). His research focuses on the epidemiology, surveillance and control of malaria and other vector-borne infectious diseases, with particular emphasis on mosquito ecology, insecticide resistance and the development and evaluation of vector-control interventions.
Professor Yewhalaw has played a major role in strengthening infectious-disease research infrastructure and scientific capacity in Ethiopia. He established malaria field research and mosquito-insectary facilities and subsequently helped establish TIDRC as a platform for high-level research, training and collaboration in tropical and infectious diseases. His research has contributed to evidence relevant to malaria-control policy and public-health practice in Ethiopia and the wider region.
He has supervised and mentored numerous MSc and PhD researchers and has received recognition from Jimma University and public-health organisations for his scientific and institutional contributions. He was elected a Fellow of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences in 2020 and a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences in 2025.
His expertise is particularly relevant to Liberia's priorities in malaria prevention, vector surveillance and control, infectious-disease research, public-health capacity development and the training of young biomedical and public-health scientists.
