Biography

Professor Edson L. Meyer is a Full Professor at the University of Fort Hare and Director of the Fort Hare Institute of Technology (FHIT), South Africa. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Port Elizabeth, now Nelson Mandela University, in 2002 and joined the University of Fort Hare in the same year. He later served as Head of the Department of Physics and has directed FHIT since 2005. Professor Meyer's research focuses on solar photovoltaic technologies, renewable-energy systems, energy efficiency and advanced materials for next-generation solar cells. His work has made important contributions to the performance, degradation and failure analysis of photovoltaic modules and has expanded into nanostructured materials, dye-sensitized and perovskite solar cells, grid integration and sustainable energy systems. He established the SolarWatt Park at the University of Fort Hare's Alice campus, which supports research on solar photovoltaic and thermal systems, heat pumps, biomass gasification and biogas technologies. He was elected a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) in 2025 in recognition of his contributions to physical sciences, renewable energy and scientific innovation in Africa. He is also an NRF C2-rated researcher and has received University of Fort Hare research awards for his sustained scholarly contributions. His academic leadership has included the supervision and mentoring of numerous postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and emerging scientists. Professor Meyer's expertise in photovoltaic technology, renewable-energy systems and applied energy research is particularly relevant to Liberia's priorities in expanding electricity access, developing off-grid and distributed solar systems, strengthening energy resilience and building applied engineering and technology capacity in its universities.
