Biography
Emmanuel K. C. Chanda is Dean of the School of Mines and Professor of Mining Engineering at the University of Zambia in Lusaka. He holds a PhD in Mining Engineering from the Technical University of Berlin, a Master of Engineering (Engineer of Mines) from the Colorado School of Mines in the United States, and a BMinSc in Mining Engineering from the University of Zambia.
Professor Chanda combines academic leadership with practical industry experience, having worked earlier in his career as a mining engineer for MINDECO Small Mines in Zambia. He has served as Head of the Mining Department at UNZA and holds an adjunct professorship at the University of Adelaide, Australia. His research and teaching span mining engineering, sustainable mineral extraction, mine design and safety, and engineering education, contributing to the development of the mining-sector workforce in southern Africa. He accepted the distinction of Fellow of the Liberia Academy of Sciences in August 2026.
His expertise is particularly relevant to Liberia's priorities in governing its mineral resources sustainably, professionalising mining and geology education, and ensuring that natural-resource development supports long-term national growth.
