Biography
Faadiel Essop is Professor and Director of the Centre for Cardio-metabolic Research in Africa (CARMA) at Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Cape Town, South Africa. He completed his doctoral studies at the University of Cape Town and worked as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School.
Professor Essop investigates the effects of chronic stress on the onset of cardio-metabolic diseases and the role of immune activation in HIV-related cardiovascular diseases. He is a former President of the Physiology Society of Southern Africa and of the African Association of Physiological Sciences, served as an elected council member of the International Union of Physiological Sciences, and is a Fellow of the American Physiological Society, the Royal Society of South Africa and the Academy of Science of South Africa. He received the PSSA's prestigious Lifetime Career Achievement Award for research excellence and the Teaching Advancement at University Fellows Award for transformative education.
