Biography
Nasheeta Peer is a Chief Specialist Scientist in the Non-Communicable Diseases Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) in Cape Town, and holds an academic affiliation with the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. She is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.
Professor Peer has built her research career on the epidemiology of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other non-communicable diseases in South African populations. She has played a leading role in major national surveys and cohort studies that document the burden, distribution and determinants of NCDs, work that has informed screening practice, prevention strategies and health-system planning in South Africa. Her publications span diabetes epidemiology, cardiometabolic risk, women's health and the social determinants of health, and she is closely involved in strengthening population-health research capacity and mentoring young scientists. She accepted the distinction of Fellow of the Liberia Academy of Sciences in August 2026.
Her expertise is particularly relevant to Liberia's priorities in confronting the rising burden of non-communicable diseases, establishing reliable epidemiological surveillance and training the public-health researchers its health system needs.
