Biography
Sally Theobald is Professor in Social Science and International Health and UKRI/FCDO Gender Senior Research Fellow in the Department of International Public Health at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), United Kingdom. She has been at LSTM since 1999 and took up the chair of Social Science and International Health in 2016.
Professor Theobald has more than twenty-five years of experience in collaborative research on strengthening health systems and equity in different contexts, including in fragile settings and informal urban settlements, and across health challenges including HIV, tuberculosis, sexual and reproductive health and rights, neglected tropical diseases and human resources for health. She was principal investigator of the ARISE hub on accountability for informal urban equity, and her work is conducted in close partnership with African and Asian research institutions. She accepted the distinction of Fellow of the Liberia Academy of Sciences in August 2026, writing that she was honoured to accept and looks forward to sharing and learning together.
Her long-standing partnership approach to health-systems research is particularly relevant to Liberia's priorities in rebuilding equitable, community-centred health services after conflict and epidemic shocks.
