Biography
Taiwo A. Lawal is Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Sciences and Professor of Surgery at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at University College Hospital, Ibadan. He graduated MBBS from Ibadan, earned a Doctorate in Medicine from Hannover Medical School in Germany and a Master's degree in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics, and holds fellowships including FWACS, FICS, FACS, FNAMed, FAMedS and FAAS.
Professor Lawal's research focuses on paediatric colorectal surgery, the prevention and management of congenital malformations, surgical outcomes research and medical education, including global collaborative analyses of surgical system resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has published widely on paediatric surgical conditions in low-resource settings and helped build collaborative surgical research and training networks across Africa and beyond. He previously served the Faculty as Sub-Dean (Undergraduate) for the MBBS programme and as Sub-Dean (Postgraduate). He accepted the distinction of Fellow of the Liberia Academy of Sciences in August 2026.
His expertise is particularly relevant to Liberia's priorities in rebuilding surgical and child-health services, strengthening medical education and expanding specialist training opportunities for the country's physicians.
