To align with the Government of Liberia’s national agricultural development agenda and address critical needs for food security and sustainable agricultural growth, the Liberia Academy of Sciences (LAS) is proud to announce its role as a co-host of the UNESCO “International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD) – Agricultural Engineering Science and Technology for a Sustainable Planet” Series Event. This landmark initiative targets Liberian agricultural practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and relevant institutions. Registration is now officially open, and all stakeholders are warmly invited to participate.
Core Event Background
This event is a key component of the UNESCO International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024-2033) – a global framework launched by the UN General Assembly and led by UNESCO to mobilize scientific expertise worldwide in solving sustainable development challenges. For Liberia, agriculture is the backbone of the national economy, employing over 40% of the total workforce . Yet the sector faces pressing hurdles: 38.4% of the population suffers from undernourishment, over 81% experience moderate or severe food insecurity, and 93% cannot afford a healthy diet . This event aims to bridge the gap between international advanced experience and local practice, addressing these critical challenges head-on.
LAS’s Role as Co-Host and Event Significance
As Liberia’s premier scientific research institution, LAS takes the lead in organizing this event to foster international cooperation and tailor cutting-edge agricultural engineering technologies to Liberia’s unique context. The agenda will focus on Liberia’s core crops – including cassava, rice, and rubber – with key topics such as optimized cultivation techniques, agricultural product processing upgrades, and efficient use of agricultural resources. By facilitating knowledge exchange and technical transfer, the event seeks to enhance local agricultural productivity, reduce reliance on food imports, and inject scientific momentum into Liberia’s sustainable agricultural development. This initiative also embodies LAS’s mission to “serve national development through science” and strengthen Liberia’s integration into the global sustainable development network.
