LAS Fellow Professor Faadiel Essop Elected to the IUPS Academy of Physiology
The Liberia Academy of Sciences congratulates Professor Faadiel Essop, a Fellow of LAS, on his election as a 2026 Fellow of the International Union of Physiological Sciences Academy of Physiology.
The Liberia Academy of Sciences (LAS) warmly congratulates Professor Faadiel Essop on his election as a 2026 Fellow of the International Union of Physiological Sciences (IUPS) Academy of Physiology.

Professor Essop is among 25 scientists named in the Academy’s published 2026 cohort. He is also one of only two members of the cohort listed from African countries, alongside Professor Radwa Ali Mehanna of Egypt.
Established in 2021, the IUPS Academy of Physiology recognises physiologists and allied professionals who have made exceptional contributions to physiological science through original discovery, sustained scholarship or distinguished international service. The Academy elects no more than 30 new Fellows each year.
Professor Essop is a Full Professor in the Division of Medical Physiology at Stellenbosch University and Director of the Centre for Cardio-metabolic Research in Africa (CARMA). His research examines cardiometabolic diseases, including the effects of chronic stress and the role of immune activation in HIV-related cardiovascular disease.
His scientific leadership has also included serving as President of the Physiology Society of Southern Africa and the African Association of Physiological Sciences, as well as contributing to the work of IUPS and the wider international physiology community.
Professor Essop’s election represents important international recognition of his contributions to physiological science, scientific leadership and the advancement of cardiometabolic research in Africa.LAS congratulates Professor Essop on this distinguished achievement and looks forward to his continued contributions to research, scientific mentorship, capacity-building and international cooperation.
