About Us

Who We Are

The Liberia Academy of Sciences (LAS) is currently Liberia’s only dedicated academy of sciences. Based in Monrovia, LAS is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit and non-political national learned society serving Liberia.

LAS brings together scientists, scholars, educators, professionals and institutional partners to promote scientific excellence, research, science education, public engagement and evidence-informed development.

LAS has a national scientific mission but is not a ministry, government agency, statutory regulator or degree-awarding university. Its national character refers to its countrywide mission, membership and service to Liberia.

The Academy is working to become Liberia’s apex independent learned society for science and a trusted national platform connecting Liberian expertise with Africa and the world.

  • Scientific Excellence and Membership: LAS recognizes and connects scientists, scholars and professionals whose work contributes to scientific knowledge, education, innovation and national development.
  • Research and Evidence: LAS initiates, supports and communicates research, country studies, policy analysis and interdisciplinary collaboration relevant to Liberia.
  • Science Advice and Policy Dialogue: LAS provides an independent platform through which scientists and experts can contribute evidence, analysis and professional perspectives to public policy and national development.
  • International Cooperation and Science Diplomacy: LAS builds partnerships with African and international academies, universities, research institutions and scientific organizations to connect Liberia with global knowledge and networks.
  • Science Education and Public Engagement: LAS promotes science education, scientific literacy, researcher development and public engagement, with attention to students, educators and early-career professionals in Liberia.

Governance and Secretariat

LAS is guided by its governing bodies and supported by the Secretariat. The Secretariat coordinates membership administration, research programmes, publications, partnerships, communications, events, finance and day-to-day operations.

Leadership

The leadership of LAS supports the Academy’s governance, scientific mission and institutional development.
